  1. The size is the length of the violin. You really need to be fitted to find out your size. They will take different sizes of violins and hold it up you your chin and down your arm. You should hold it between your chin and shoulder and then your middle finger should wrap around the scroll at the end while your arm is straight and barely rest inside the box. That's how you will know what size you are. Contact a local violin shop to do it or have your music teacher size you.

  2. Size is the length of the violin, as well as the length of the bow. 1/8 is the smallest - I was 3 when I started, so I had one of them. It was tiny as. Most kids start on a quarter size though. If you are a teenager/adult, you will need a full size violin. If you are not, then you should go into a music shop and they will help you find the right size, so you can buy the right one from ebay. Have fun :]

  3. A 4/4 violin is a full-size instrument for an adult or teen.  Then there are fractional sizes for smaller children, from 7/8, to 3/4, to 1/2, to 1/4, down to 1/8 to 1/16 for tiny kids like 2-years-old.

If you're old enough to be posting here on Y!A, you probably can use a full size 4/4 instrument, or, if you're really small for your size, a 3/4 or 7/8 size instrument.  The only way to know for sure what size you need is to go to a violin shop and have the sales person fit you for an instrument -- it depends on the length of your arms and the size of your hands.

A violin outfit is a complete set of everything you need to play -- a violin, a bow, a case, some rosin.

Personally, if you've never played violin before and don't know what to look for, I DO NOT recommend buying off of ebay!!  The violin outfits available there tend to be very cheap, not very good quality, not set up to play properly.  The fiddles themselves might be OK but the bows that come with the outfit are generally junk -- and for a beginner, the quality and playability of the bow is at least as important -- maybe more important -- than the quality and playability of the violin.

Go to a real music store that specializes in violins, let the sales person figure out what size fiddle you need, and let them help you find a good beginner instrument.

  4. 4/4 is Full Size, usually what someone would be playing when they are probably 12-13 yrs and older.

3/4 size is for beginning students, maybe 4th or 5th grade.

1/2 size is really tiny, maybe for kids or small people who start at age 5 or 6.

It really depends on the size of person and their fingers.

If you're in middle school you should be looking for a fullsize 4/4 Violin.
