What do the standard 2D scans show?

I'm due for my 20 week scan in a couple of weeks and would like to know what level of detail they show. Do they show up any abnormalities (e.g facial, limbs etc abnormalities) or would we have to get a 3D or 4D scan for this. Would just rather be forewarned of any issues!

  1. if there are abnormalities they will usually be able to catch it at the 20 weeks scan. they cant see every single kind of abnormality, but for the most part they will be able to tell.

  2. 2D scans aren't that great. I can't tell what is what if my life depended on it. I had a 3D ultrasound and those are great! I could make out facial features and everything.  Good Luck!

  3. You can see all areas of the baby in a regular 2d scan.  When I was pregnant with my twins they detected an abdominal wall defect with the regular scan and I never had to get the 3d/4d advanced one.  You either have to pay for those or they have to have a specific reason to do that, or at least that's how it is in Cincinnati.  When I was pregnant with my son we got one picture that was his whole face, and he really looked like that when he came out it was almost eerie! I think all the 3d/4d ones do it give it more depth and perception like the face would actually look round as opposed to flat! Good luck with your ultrasound, about 20 weeks huh?  You should be able to find out if it's a boy or girl!!

  4. I am sure that your baby doesn't have anything wrong with his/her face they should measure the limbs and what not and how they are growing. At 20 weeks the skin is still thin and doesn't have a lot of fat on it. I have had a lot of 3-D and 2-D ultra sounds and the 2-D you can't really see what there face is going to look like that early, you can see the bones and what not. My doctor does a 3-D U/S every time I go in and even still the baby looks a little funny !! hope this helps

  5. You can see the baby's internal organs, or the tech can, anyway. They'll know if there is anything abnormal there. As far as limbs and such, you'd be able to see something if it were really crazy, like an extra arm, but don't count on being able to count fingers and toes. For the most part you'll be able to see that your baby is generally healthy and normal.
