What do the zoos do when gigantic animals such as the elephants, giraffes and hippopotamus die? Do they saw them up into many pieces or do just burn it or dig a big hole and bury them?

  3. When zoo animals die, they are usually incinerated. With large animals like elephants, the carcass has to be cut into sections before it will fit into the incinerator.

  5. Most visitors to zoos are children.  They are happy to believe that once animals come to the zoo, they Live Happily Ever After.  And so, they never die, do they?

  6. The bodies are often sent to companies that specialize in skeletons, such as Skulls Unlimited.  They will take the corpse and place it into a container with dermestid beetles, which eat all the remaining hair and flesh, leaving behind a clean skeleton.  The bones can then be used for teaching aids or museum pieces.

    Other times the corpses will be sent to a university for scientific study or for use as cadavers for veterinary students.
