What does the 'iu' stand for? Is it the same meaning as 'mg'?

IU means International unit.  It has nothing to do with mg.  See the link for better explaination.

As to your second question, what you should see is not how many IU to take but the percentage of daily value.  You can see it on the bottle.  As long as it says one pill is 100% of daily value, you are good.  How many IU corresponds to 100% of daily required value is determined by scientists.

40IU = 2000micro grammes therefore 1 IU is 50micrograms

IU is not milligram ,it is international units-a different measure.

Dosage depends on body weight as well as requirement of a particular person to be decided by your Physician. 200mg-once /twice daily or 400mg once /twice daily.
