What do these mean in a dream: ghosts, night time and water?

a common theme of the dreams is trying to prevent my son disappearing or being taken by these figures.

Ghosts in your dreams can mean many things. It depends on who the ghosts are, whether you know them, and what your relationship with them is. Just ghosts in general means that you are feeling guilty about something. Water in your dream denotes aspects of your spirituality. It also depends on whether the water was clear, dirty, a certain color, etc. Nightime in your dreams also denotes hidden aspects of your spirituality. Maybe there are some thoughts and beliefs you are adopting that your not quite sure of and the "ghosts"  (advisers) are trying to help you. It is your subconscious mind's way of sorting things out for you.

You have to start with what they mean to you.  How do you feel about these things in waking life?  How do you feel about them in the dreams themselves?  I would journal about each item, describing them in great detail and my emotions about them.  You put ghosts in quotes which makes me ask what you mean by ghosts?  Like white sheet, boo!?  Transparent apparitions of those that have passed on?  Or something else entirely?
