Question:

What do these specs for an SDS rotary drill mean?

I want a good SDS drill for around the house stuff...but I am confused as to the spec:

"Maximum Capacity...concrete, steel, wood" and "Optimal Concrete Capacity Range"

What do these mean? Is it the max depth it can drill? Thanks for any help....

  1. you are talking about the diameter  not the depth

1" Is the largest diameter that it will do etc if that is what you mean

  2. The stroke and torque of the drill is design to be "OPTIMAL" at that range.  It doesn't mean you can't go deeper.  Make sure you are using the correct bit.  And don't over heat the drill.

It all depends how frequently you will use this drill.  Hilti is the best, but they anre't cheap.

  3. The Capacity listed on the drill for the various materials is the diameter of the hole you are drilling.   The larger the hole you are drilling, the more rotational torque you are creating, and that increases due to the hardness of the material.  so you should be able to drill a larger hole in wood than in concrete.   if you tried to drill a 3 inch hole in concrete you would probably burn out the motor.

BUT,  these are just guidelines.  you may be able to do a larger hole in concrete if you took ir really slow and didn't apply a lot of pressure, and the bit was nice and sharp and yata yata yata.

  4. Diameter

  5. you have answered your own question

  6. As far as depth, a lot of the drill specs say :Optimal Concrete Capacity Range 1" or so - that doesn't see like a deep hole given the length of the bits? why is there a limit? if the bits 3" long why cant it go 3" deep?

Optimal is the "best" so the best concrete capacity range 1" or so.

Without seeing all or more instructions its hard to comment on this. The chuck of a drill has a capacity for the size of drill bits that you can fit in it.

As for the length of drill bit, they can be 3" or 23" long its weather they will fit in the chuck that counts. I can't see you having a chuck that opens to accept a 1" diameter drill bit, they generally go up to 5/8s mostly 1/2".

  7. Maximum capacity is the diameter of the bit. An sds hammer is not to be used with a bit over 1" diameter. You can drill as deep as the bit you purchase. Bits are sold by diameter and drilling depth and overall depth. Drilling depth is the suggested deepest measurement. Overall length is the overall length of the drill bit from end of bit to other end of shank.

You cannot use an sds hammer in wood or steel without an adapter to change your sds function to a regular chuck. SDS hammers don't have a chuck like a regurlar drill, they have a grooved out adapter and the bits are grooved out also to match it.
