  1. :-) = a happy face. the colon is the eyes, the dash is the nose, and the parenthese is the mouth.

    :-( = the same thing. the parenthese is the mouth in an 'unhappy' position.

    others you might see are: :-o = surprised (mouth is open in surprise), :-s = confused (not sure where that comes from), or :-P = a happy face. the P is a mouth with it's tounge sticking out.

    Just mentally rotate the symbols 90 degrees clockwise, and you'll see the smile and frown (in addition to the other facial expressions defined in Querida's answer above.
