What do they call Canadian Bacon in Canada?

My theory is that in Canada they were smart enough to see America's Canadian bacon and say "Wait... that's ham" until a friend of mine told me they call their Canadian bacon 'Back Bacon'. Is that true? I'm using this question on my live broadcasted show so your answers may be repeated publically. Ham or back bacon?

  1. Back bacon  wrapped in cornmeal is called peameal bacon.

  2. It is called back bacon or Canadian bacon, while similar to ham, it is different

  3. Back bacon.  But it is different than what you get in the US.  This is a good topic.  Ever had a Canadian Pizza?  Ham and Pineapple?  We call it a Hawaiian Pizza.

I went to Greece once and ordered a Greek Salad in a Restaurant.  I was quickly corrected that it wasn't called that, it was a House salad.

  4. Canadian bacon and back bacon are the same thing and get called both here though back bacon is more common. It's not the same as ham at all though there are similarities in taste. The bacon comes from a different part of the animal. Ham comes from the leg or shoulder. Back bacon comes from the loin. Peameal bacon is the same thing in theory though I have noticed that when it's sold as peameal bacon it's usually wetter and not as tasty as what is labelled back bacon, but they all stick to the frying pan something awful. A little water added at the end solves that.

  5. i call it ham, and have honestly never heard anyone call it "canadian bacon" unless they were from the states, and have never heard anyone say back bacon either

  6. Yes, in Canada it would generally be referred to as back bacon, at least in the area I live in.  Although it is similar to pea-meal bacon there are differences.  "Canadian Bacon", or back bacon, is made from cured, smoked cooked pork loin.  Pea-meal bacon is also made from pork loin but it is cured in brine or sweet pickled, uncooked, and has a cornmeal crust on it.  Any time I have had "Canadian Bacon" in the US it is more similar to what I know as back bacon than to pea-meal.  Back bacon can be used like ham or a pork loin roast however in most stores you would find it labelled as back bacon.

  7. Back Bacon is correct.

  8. Back bacon.

    Ham is different.
