  1. The difference between Broadway jazz and regular jazz is just that....Broadway.  Broadway jazz is usually used in musical shows & reviews.  They tend to focus not only on technique but mostly on performance.  They help in developing characters and an overall "feel" of the show.  This includes, character acting in jazz, using facial and physical expressions, while continuing to perform the dance choreography itself.

    In class they may do:

    Jazz isolations

    Jazz combinations, turns, jumps, etc.

    Facial expressions

    Character development & acting exercises

Stage combat (thru dance - ie: West Side Story)

They may focus on a particular style (like Bob Fosse, very turned in style but very jazzy & entertaining - ie: Cabaret, Chicago, All That Jazz, etc)

You may even get a nice lesson in tap, as some stage musicals involve show tapping (ie: 42nd Street)

Broadway Jazz is my favorite dance.  You can dance your heart out and still get the thrill of playing a character.  It's dancing and acting rolled up into one.  Just have fun at your new class - I'm sure you will.  Best of luck to you!  Hope this helps!

  2. There will be some turns and jumps like in a regular jazz class....it is still jazz technique...but the emphasis is usually more on character and acting with in the choreography.

You'll probably learn a lot of choreography and combinations from Broadway shows.

Theatre jazz is probably my favorite style of dance, you'll have a blast!
