What do they do with the toxic batteries from hybrid cars when they are depleted?

Just woundering because there is some pretty nasty stuff in those batteries. We could go from just bad air to bad air, water, and soil. Even though they recharge they will still only take so many charges.

They are fully recycleable.

"Toyota has a comprehensive battery recycling program in place and has been recycling nickel-metal hydride batteries since the RAV4 Electric Vehicle was introduced in 1998. Every part of the battery, from the precious metals to the plastic, plates, steel case and the wiring, is recycled. To ensure that batteries come back to Toyota, each battery has a phone number on it to call for recycling information and dealers are paid a $200 "bounty" for each battery."

Well they get recharged (if you mean discharged)

And then recycled (when they can no longer be recharged sufficiently)

Same thing they do with regular car batteries, laptop batteries, AA batteries, and so on. They can be recycled.

I seem to remember an article in a news paper stating that mining the material used in the  production of these batteries has caused widespread environmental damage so making them no greener than an ordinary car.

Lets hope that they can recycle them efficiently

It is simple to neutralize most toxic acids.

   Example

HCL a bad acid

Caustic soda bad base.

if u mix to a ph of 7 then what do u have????

   Now it is table salt and water.

The first generation batteries (well over 10 years old) are still in operation.  No one is really sure how long they will last.  However, Toyota has plans to recycle the batteries when/if they die.
