What do they look for on a background check?

I'm thinking of applying for a job at the post office but I have 2 misdemeanor charges for assault. Will those stop me from getting the job? What do they look for when they do a background check. Other than those 2 things I haven't got anything else on my record ~ not even a speeding ticket.

  1. I'm not sure but I know what it means to "go postal" and I doubt they would hire anyone who has a history of assaulting someone...twice...especially with the new gun law!  Maybe you should take classes for a law enforcement job.

  2. Backgrpound checks look for any criminal record and are used to determine if you are suitable for the job.  Two miseneanor charges that have been long settled will not immediately bar you from working anywhere.

  3. It depends on the job.

If you are applying for a position that works with children at all, then you can forget getting it with a couple of assaults on your record. It really doesn't matter how long ago it was, either. Especially if it has to do with any domestic abuse.

  4. When I used to do background checks (for a finance department at a casino) we looked for felonies, and any crimes involving theft or drug use. Also, we checked to see if there were any court ordered wage garnishments like unpaid child support or alimony payments. That's it!

Nothing else even showed up in our records.

We had the most strict background check out of all the other departments because we were dealing with money. So if you could pass our test, and you could have, you can pass a test at the post office.

  5. any convictions, unpaid tickets, like police calls and stuff. just any trouble with the law.
