What do they mean by a cover to get into a club?

Me and my friend are debating on what it actually is. so could somebody help us?

It literally means an amount the venue charges to "cover" their costs. In some cases the venue genuinely does need to charge this because people often go in and don't buy enough drinks in order for the owners to make a profit, or in other cases they charge it just because they can and it makes them more money.
