I went to public school in 8th grade.  I'm  not sure what the school administration intended, but I learned a lot of profanity, how to cheat, how to avoid work, and how to chase girls.  My peers were very effective teachers.

It depends on where you live. If he's going to a public school, go to your state's department of education and check out the learning outcomes/curriculum/whatever word they might use. Find out what the government expects gr. 8 students in your state to learn.
