It's funny to watch, I think the second fight between Ortiz and Lidell, just before Ortiz enters the ring they try to go through all the pre ring ritual with him but you can tell he's saying yeah,yeah eff that, then refuses to get the vaseline applied just so he can storm into the ring fully clothed and run around with his flag. This err in judgement and poor attitude resulted in a huge cut just above his eyebrow that was gushing blood and surely has scared him for life. The vaseline is to prevent these type of injuries.

Petroleum jelly commonly referred to by the trade name Vaseline. Lots of fighters use this to keep from getting cut up from the gloves or hands pounding the face. Applying it especially heavy around the cheek bones and outside eye sockets.
