What do think of this statement?

ADD, ADHD and Dyslexia, I believe all of those are just excuses.

she goes on to say:

My son's pedi told me he had ADHD. Had I believed him, my son would be drugged up right now AND my son would sit here believing that he has a problem and an excuse for acting up. But, since I didn't, he's not. I just simply told him, he needs to calm down! Problem solved.

this is a direct quote from a mail message i recieved from another user.

personally, i dont believe its an excuse, considering my nephew is autistic and attends a mainstream school with a base within it for kids with autism and adhd. there is 8 kids in the base altogether. having seen these kids, i know they have problems and telling them to calm down isnt as simple as saying problem solved.

now this persons personal situation may have been true that she just had to say calm down, but is there anyone else out there who thinks these disorders are just an excuse for badly behaved kids?

  1. No these are in the majority of cases real problems needing varying degrees of professional help in some cases. However I must point out that the use of such complaints as an excuse has in modern times spread from north america and is to be seen in most cultures today.

As always a few advantage seekers make matters worse for the genuinely afflicted.

  2. Not excuses. I think the doctor can tell the difference in a disorder and a badly behaved child. If dont get help for her child (that obviously has a disorder) then it will only cause problems later on down the road. Some parents go into denial about things like that and don't want to face the truth. It's sad!

  3. nope.  i know four people who seriously have this condition and they need help with it.  no excuses here.

  4. not an excuse for badly behaved kids.  an excuse for the parents.  parents these days want things as easy as possible.  feed their kids a crappy dinner, but not have to deal with the hypernes afterward.  no one is firm enough anymore either.  *shrugs*

  5. They are NOT excuses.  3 of my brothers have/had ADHD.  When other kids have koolaid , its just a drink.  When my brothers had koolaid , my dad wanted to kill one of them because it was like speed.  Its a real issue.  My step brothers real dad refused to give him the pills , and when he came back to our house he was like a beast , and he would sit on his bed rocking himself back and forth for hours.  They all took medication for it, they had to.  When they became old enough , my dad let them decide if they need it anymore , the oldest did not any more , and the other two still need it , they almost failed in school.  From personal experience , kids who dont get the help from medication and talking to counselors , are being neglected.

  6. Unfortunately, today they have become excuses in many peoples' eyes due to overdiagnosis.  A large percentage of children that are diagnosed with these disorders really do just need to be told to calm down.  However, there are some children that legitimately need to be treated and receive a lot of flak for it because of overuse of the drugs and behavioral treatments.

  7. I don't know if I think it's a excuse and that's the honest truth I know kids that have ADD and they behave badly when they aren't on their medication. but the parents who went to their doctors to find out what is wrong with their children have tried the calm down sit in timeout and probably spanking and nothing works I just wish that there where other forms of calming them as opposed to the medicane's because she is right they are on those drugs for a long time and all medicane's have effects when they are used for a long time.

  8. How is dyslexia an excuse? Seeing letters and words all jumbled up and backwards makes school so hard for a child. My brother is dyslexic and I watched him struggle his whole life from it. Its not an excuse for not being able to read or not wanting too, he wanted too and he tried very hard, but it got so frustrating because he COULD NOT DO IT. I also have someone very close to me who suffers from ADHD/ADD and it is no joke! It has made his life miserable. Now I do think some people take advantage of the ADD/ADHD medicine and put perfectly healthy children on it just to calm them down. Its pretty sad, but you know it happens. This statement really erks me. How can you blame the children (or parents) for the child being "bad" when they honestly can't help it. I hope that whoever made that statement gets a child that really does have one of these disorders. It is one of the hardest things to work through, and takes an amazing parent as well. I hope that person gets a does of their own medicine.

Okay people, thumbs down me for a perfectly good answer. I am just giving PERSONAL EXPERIENCES! Sheesh the people on this website...

  9. Most of the kids with add or adhd I see, yes, either a lazy diagnosis from the doctor, or just plain bad parenting.

I babysat this kid who was completely off the handle, his mom said he was adhd.  But really, when I saw how she parented him, no wonder he was off the handle and 'hyperactive'.  A simple diet change would have done a world of difference.  But it looked like she would've preffered to say "he's adhd, poor me, I have to deal with this".

I don't know much about Dyslexia, but seen soooo many people on here say that when they misspell something.  So sometimes it does sound like an "excuse".

  10. lol, that message is from ME!!!!!!

You were gloating about your Top Contributer badge.  So, I corrected your grammar.  as a joke, because you were being conceited!!.  Then you started going on about your sisters kid and adhd and autism and stuff.  I thought ...... what the???  this chick's cheese slid off her cracker!  I'll have some fun.

    lighten up =)

  11. I think it is as far as add go and adhd those are kids being kids ussually who have mothers who have never told thme to sit down and shut updyslexia on the other hand is different I have dyslexia and all it does is cause me to see things backwards.

  12. They're def not excuses, they're real conditions but I think lots of people say their kids have ADD or ADHD when they don't and occasionally they could be mis diagnosed. My little boy is 16 months old, most nights he only sleeps from 11 or 12 and then is up again at half 5, he naps for an hour mid morning and a half hour around 3. He's been walking properly since a week after his 1st birthday and runs about mad all day, he doesn't stop, is mega curious, tries to climb everything, and no matter what activities you do wit him he's still full of energy. I know people who would say he was hyperactive or must have ADD but he's not, he's just a bright little boy with lots of energy who doesn't need much sleep. And before anyone says I give him nearly everything homemade so he gets no additives or sweet snacks. Its just the way he is.

I think its unfair that people who really have these conditions are doubted in this way just because lots of people with energetic kids are jumping on the band waggon.

  13. I dont believe ADD or ADHD are "real".  Just a kid being fed c**p food, or a parent not discipling their kid.

  14. Kids with ADHD Can not help it. They brain works a little different. The energy part of the brain is more active from other kids. Medicine solves that problem.
