What do those roadsigns mean when you see a triangle and a square on yellow b/grnd?

They are on most signs , They have been around as far back as i can remember, but what do they mean?

  1. Diversion route I think you mean


  2. They are to show where a diversion goes - some routes have regular diversions for roadworks and the diversion signs are permanent.

    At the start of the diversion there will be a yellow sign, black text "Diversion Follow ....." and then there will be a black box, circle or triangle - so all you have to do then is follow the symbol - black shape on yellow background to get you past the roadworks or whatever.

    This is simular idea to tourist signs that say "For castle follow.... " and then the picture of a castle- you follow the picture to get to where you want to be.

    If there are 2 diversions going along the same stretch of raod then using a different symbol for each is better than writing "Diversion go left" since all the diverted traffic will go that way and not just the traffic that needs to go that way.
