  1. The answer above mine is partially wrong.

    The guy says - trees consume oxygen for photosynthesis. This is a blunder.

    Let me tell you what exactly happens.

    Trees absorb water and essential minerals (in their simplest form) from the soil by their deep seated roots.

    They use Carbon dioxide (not oxygen) from the atmosphere.

    The leaves act as the kitchen for the synthesis of carbohydrates from where its transported to rest of the plant parts. Hence growth occurs.

    Unlike plants, we need to take in carbohydrates directly because we cannot prepare them in our body.

    ..so the little sapling makes food by photosythesis...takes in water and minerals via the roots...takes in oxygen thru the leaves....

    ..over the years it grow.....
