What do triangle rubber bands on braces do?

Question

I had been previously wearing rubber bands connecting my bottom molars and the teeth next to my top incisors, to correct my overbite and now my orthodontist has me wearing them in a triangle on each side connecting the teeth 2 over from my top incisors to the bottom teeth right below that and one closer to the middle. What do these triangle rubber bands do? Is that just another way to fix an overbite or is it fixing something else? They also said that after i wear these triangles for a month, i will be done with my rubber bands completely. So what do these triangles do?

I have to wear them right now, it hurts so bad D: I don't really know what there for but I guess at my next appointment I get them off(:

i just got them yesterday,, and they are killing me.. any suggestions on how to stop the pain!?

I recently have the triangles in now, they are to close in the spaces/gaps between your top and bottom teeth.
