  1. ask if they can give you extra reading help.also ask if you cant type out reports and homework instead or writing them down. My daughter is 11 and dyslexic. She is having a rough time this year also in school. We are trying to have her memorize one word a day how to spell it. that has seemed to help her out alot.  We are  also made her a cheat sheet of word she was spelling most often. Her teacher last year taped a letter chart to her desk so she could look at it if she needed to. you didn't say what grade you are in but make sure your teachers know you are struggling. if the teacher wont help you ask to be switched to another class .

  2. Not everyone who has Dyslexia needs special education services. Many people have quested this disability in that it tends to be overly used sometimes in the field of special education. Unless your now starting to have serious problems with reading and/or written language and you have created a paper trail of documentation then you will have a weak case.

There is a very good book I was required to read in graduate school at California State University Sacramento. While in the Adults with Learning Disability program there I was required to read Overcoming Dyslexia. This book is based on the most current brain research but is very easy reading and very enlightening, I would strongly encourage you to get and read it first.

  3. Print off the 100 Words Often Misspelled, spelling rules, homophones and frequently confused words, you can get these from the link below, then laminate them, keep a copy at home and in your school folder.

You can also use a dictionary, but the down side is trying to find unfamiliar words in it when we don't know how its spelt in the first place.

When doing assignments always do a draft then ask the teacher to check it, and to make sure your on the right track. Any words that you think is wrong underline them, so the teacher knows you know it may not be correct.

If the teacher is asking you to copy from the board, ask the teacher if they could write each paragraph in a different colour, so you can keep track of where you (this really does help).

Also ask teachers to print off assignments and task on coloured paper, which helps with reading by cutting the glare, you will have to try different colours (I use a light blue and cream colour)

I use these tips for myself, I also use spell check often, and Read & Write Gold computer program too, which helps me with reading etc. I absolutely hate homophones since I mix up similar sounding words often.

Another really good computer program is Dragon Naturally speaking which my daughter has used, and she said it is very helpful.

  4. Ask your parents to find a local dyslexia specialist and get them to evaluate you and to give you some recommendations.  It is difficult to tell you exactly what to do to help because it's different for everyone. Mississippi College has a dyslexia therapy course and several specilist on the staff.  Contact them to see if you can get some pointers from them or maybe they can recommend someone in your area.  You and your parents, and maybe the specialist, should meet with your teachers and put together support for you.  Dyslexia isn't going to go away but you can learn some skills that will help you to manage with it and you will do well.  For more information go to www.MississippiEducationalConsultantandA...

  5. Hello Taylor in response to your question there is help at school. There are teachers who specialize in this area and should be able to help you. You could use an overlay when you are reading something. I know they come in different kind colors. Do not worry there is help out there in your school.
