  1. 'Fewer lone parents are found in Asian families than in Afro-Caribbean families, due to cultural differences.'

  2. Less lone parents in Asia because in a lot of Asia divorce is not an option for most women, many women are murdered who try to run away from their patriarchal marriage.  Women are not accepted in large parts of Asia unless they are married.  I agree with the statement but it is like that because women do not have a choice they are controlled.

  3. yes and you also need to add that some have never or will love their partners and are afraid to get out of the relationships, due to cultural pressures.Where as afro-Caribbeans are more up front on their rights etc and will action them if need be.

  4. I haven't done exhaustive research on how great the difference is but generaly the value placed upon the family in most Asian countries is one of the highest. Obedience to parents and parental obligations to children are only two of these aspects that reign fairly supreme in places like India, Thailand, cambodia Laos etc.

  5. It is an interesting statement, although not written correctly. Is it true?

  6. interesting!

  7. That's a very generalised statement.  There are so many things you have to consider when making a statement so bold.  Is that the truth or is that what society wants us to believe?  Is it fair to group or pit all Asians against Afro-Carib. people?  What about the families that are mixed - Asian and Afro-Carib?  How about the cultural aspect?  Are all Asians of one type of culture? What about Afro-Carib people?  How did you come to that statement?  Also remeber statistics are very often based on biased opinions.

But lets say it's true - the results of gained data may suggest that there are more single-parent Afro-Carib. families.

Is it norms within cultures?  What does that mean?  Because both terms Asian and Afro-Carib. count for millions and millions of individuals.  Can both be defined by a set of 'usual' social factors within those identity groups?

OK, let's say they are - Is it these norms that constrain people into thinking how they should act?

Maybe Asian couples are less likely to separate or divorce because they are still so constrained within their social structures that they do not feel that they have any choice in the matter.  In which case, it is not that healthy being a child within that setting.

Whereas with Afro-Carib people, it is not so traditional but that's not to say that their culture allows and welcomes single-parent families.  But just as other differing groups of people, not just Afro-Caribs, they have more agency (choice) within their social norms therefore they don't feel like they have to put up with a bad relationship.

Then again, someone could argue with me and say I am trying to say that asian couples with kids aren't happy and that they'd leave each other if they could!

And that all single parent families came from bad relationships which is not necessarily always the case.

So to answer your question, we had to assume and generalise alot in order to come to some form of reply to this!

Hmmm... that's why I love social science and it's concepts!  There's no one right or wrong way to answer a question - of course what's right and wrong if not structures within our own societies?!

  8. fewer better than less.delete rather.not sure about about the accuracy of the statement though.
