i usually blush or feel embarassed when they say that so i just say thanks.

Thanks is enough but if the other person is looking great also then say so or if the other person is a female and not looking great compliment her on something she is wearing or maybe her hair.... her smile. Well you look great to me means also you look very fit and in good health.. so it's not just to do with looks as such... if the other person looks very healthy and tanned or with rosy cheeks then you should return the compliment.. if it's a woman... men don't usually say that to each other and if they do.. then ''thanks'' you haven't changed either since I last saw you... I would say... from guy to guy...

Depends on the setting.

For an unexpected compliment, a compliment from a stranger, or from someone you see on a routine basis, a sincere thank you is all you need. A return compliment is not necessary. Thanks from you alone will make them feel good. Do not deny your compliment with "no, I'm not" or "this old thing?" as it will make both of you uneasy.

I think an exception would be if you see a very good friend whom you haven't seen in awhile. If they say "you look great!" it might seem a little insulting to them if you just say "thank you".
