  1. Great idea if you've always wanted to visit Iraq or Afghanistan.

  2. I think it's a perfectly respectable and legitimate career choice.

  3. I think enlisting in the United States Military is one of the best choices a young person can make - provided that the choice is made for the right reasons.

Soldiers (and Marines, Airmen, and Sailors) are taught to live a very regimented, disciplined lifestyle.  They get training in a career field of their choice for free (technically they get paid for it) and have the benefit of the Tuition Assistance program as well as the Montgomery G.I. Bill.  They get real-world experience while most college students just go to classes and work a part-time job unrelated to their career field.  And while the pay certainly isn't great, you must also consider that Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors do not pay for housing, food, or gym memberships, and of course have a very short commute to and from work, so they are not affected by rising gas prices as much as most civilians are.  One of the things that I love about the Military is the sense of kinship - it's like my entire flight and I are a big family; we're always there for each other.  We work as a cohesive unit, which is nearly unheard of in the civilian world.  And, of course, I know that I am actually making a difference in the world on a day-to-day basis; plus, I'm extremely nationalistic so I love being able to serve my country.

It's not for everyone, though; that's why so many people wash out within the first year.  Only 40% of Soldiers last a full 12 months in the US Army (that 12 months consists of basic training, AIT, and usually their first duty station unless they have a lengthy AIT).

  4. I think its a good idea. Whether you like it or hate it it will be a good experience. Like anything else you get what you put in. If you go I strongly recommend you choose a jobthat'ss related to what you want to do when or if you decide to get out.

  5. I think it would be an excellent choice.  I assume you're fairly young.  The Army will pay for your education (up to $4500 a year, remember that), as long as your score is pretty good on the ASVAB you pretty much have your choice of job, you can train in whatever you want to do, and if you don't like your job just stick with it for a while and ask to transition to a different MOS, (I'm qualified for 2 different jobs), you gain leadership skills, life skills, nunchuck skills (just kidding...joke), and not to mention retirement benefits, military discounts, a sharp looking uniform, getting to travel the world, meeting tons of new people, a sense of pride, and the list goes on.   Don't expect a cakewalk, however.  At times it's not going to be easy, but just do what you're supposed to do and be where you're supposed to be, and everything will go well for you.  That's what I think.

  6. im glad your actually thinking about it before you sign...unlike many who enlist then realize they made a mistake and they try to get out...go for it when you get out its nice that DD214 can help you get a job just about anywhere...

  7. believe me, you really don't want to know.

(and if you want unbiased answers, don't ask this in the military section. as you can see they'll tell you that the risk of being shot or blown up is just great.)
