  1. My belief is that reunification is not necessary. It does not benefit the irish republic economy to gain an extra 1.5 million people overnight. The republics economy is doing well, look what happened to germany after reunification.

While the unionists have nothing to fear from the republic, many in the republic do not want  sinn fein  in government here, as can be seen from the recent election results.

I hope the unionist community will build a trusting working relationship with the republic.

While my personal view is not held by many, it makes sense if you think of what would happen.

The low tax low public spending philosophy of the republics government would not be feasable as the administrative costs would be huge, we could not absorb the costs. Eire says no.

It annoys me that we gave the north 7 billion this year as part of our budget. Its better spent down here, They dont even know that we are giving them money.

A lot of irish business men own property in the north and on the shankhill road.

Northern ireland has a lot more problems than the sectarian ones.

Can i use this chance to ask people to stop calling the republic southern ireland, its name is the irish republic, Eire, or the republic of ireland. Calling it southern ireland Is the same as calling england southern scotland.

  2. Well said, deburca 98. Any reunification that may happen will not be in the immediate future I think, if at all. The rate of population growth in Northern Ireland indicates that at some point in the future catholics will outnumber protestants. This is not the case at the moment, so the majority want to remain a part of the UK. Even so, a proportion of protestants may have nationalist views as may some catholics have unionist views, however small this demographic is.

I actually don't like bringing religion into this because it's not the whole story.

Deburca pretty much nailed it on the head with regard to the economy. The Republic's economy has done very well over the last 10 years, and seems to be continuing that way. Adding 1.5 million people,  a sizeable chunk of land and a slower economy will not benefit the Republic.

The difference you speak of is a difference of opinion. I respect people's opinions if the're loyal to the Queen of England. It really has no bearing on my life down here in the south. Know what I mean?

As long as those opinions are not clouded with blatant anti-Irish (racist, if you like) sentiments and attempts at outrageous history "revisionism", I say live and let live.

It's a small country, but there's still plenty of room for everyone.

  3. I belive Ireland should certainly be united, its actually one country so why not make it as one politically & on the map as one, why let others rule your own country when you certainly proved you can run your own country, it just does not make sense to me that a nation should just split into 2 when infact it has the same people, same culture etc, the difference now is that Northern Ireland has mainly Protestants, of whom are English, Scottish ancestry & so its not suprising Northern Ireland is run by the British, but Irish are Irish, you live in Ireland so your Irish, let the Iirsh run the whole country, i for one belive there will be less voilence or no voilence or no voilence at all, it will bring people of all faiths together, because as spilt how it is will always cause friction, being united makes more sense, Northern Ireland is in the Republic of Ireland so let it be as one.

  4. The forces of globalization are opposed to Irish Nationalism.

Both governments in London and Dublin are Bilderbergers and in their pockets.

  5. I don't believe it will happen because at the moment there is peace and no fighting.why ruin something that is working well?
