How B.C. became a world crime superpower

Forget forestry or fishing. B.C.'s big, multi-billion-dollar growth industry is crime. And business is booming.

Also at Macleans.caBy almost any measure it was a thriving enterprise, with subsidiaries in eight countries and a flourishing distribution business. Even more impressive, it was run out of Vancouver, a city that's seen many head offices disappear over the years. And with its strong sales, the venture would easily have been considered one of British Columbia's largest private companies. That is, if the operation at the heart of it all wasn't a criminal syndicate trading in marijuana, cocaine, heroin, guns and real estate

  2. Ouch. Used to live right on the border, by White Rock and Surrey...it might be somewhat accurate. I know that smuggling is really big along there. Vancouver is, after all, ideally located for a whole lot of interesting enterprises- you have lots of folks travelling in and out of there, and tons of opportunities for prostitution, moving drugs, stolen property, etc. But I think it's overstating the importance to the provincial economy, and to the entire nation of Canada, really....That would be like saying the same thing of Southern California, or New York, Hong Kong, or Prague, even- partially true, but not completely. I mean, there's just so much of it out there- and in so many places- it's not like any one place has a lock on it, y'know? ;)

  3. Sad but true. The h***s Angels and Vietnamese and south asian gangs have a stranglehold on the lower mainland. The Angels have a pipeline running to the Alberta oilfields that might come close to the value of the oil coming out. Last week, there were 3 gang related killings in Greater Vancouver. Not sure what the year to date total is, but its got to be higher than the number of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan this year. There are neighbourhoods where every other house has a grow op, bars and strip clubs that are openly run by the Angels, 19 year olds in Richmond with no visible means of support driving AMG Benz's and Ferraris, bikers who are multi millionaires, property developers, 'legitimate' business owners, etc. Burying your head in the sand and saying that there is no problem is just going to allow them to proliferate. Don't wait until they move in next door to you, or the bullets from the gang fights come through your windows.
