  1. Another version of the potato race, we played egg and spoon, but in this case, we used ping pong balls.  Have a bucket at one end with ping pong balls, and empty buckets at the other end.  You have to scoop ping pong balls out of the one bucket (everyone works from the same bucket, unless you have a larger group), go as fast as you can to your bucket at the other end and get your ping pong ball in that bucket.  The loser picks up all the dropped ping pong balls.

We played an amateur version of polo that was wildly entertaining.  I fell off more times than I care to remember until I got the hang of being out of the saddle, off balance and swinging a mallet.

Occasionally, we would play an obstacle course game.  We set up the course, and everyone had to run the course on everyone else's horse.  Lowest total time won on all horses.  It was really fun to see other people ride your horse and to ride other horses.   One course we made had you ground tie and walk around the horse before you could move on.  Every time someone got off my horse, he would walk toward me.  Sweet guy.

    Have fun!

  2. try doing tounge twister while you horse is going fast.

do you have any thing you could use as an obsticle course?

  3. 1.  musical chairs  (have stools set up around the arena, play the music, when it stops, run your horse over, dismount, and sit down)

super duper funny because if you get competetive people end up lunging off their horses for the stool

    2. root beer race (a giant bucket of rootbeer at one end, and everyone with with a tiny cup and an empty bucket at the other end.  within the time span,  get the most rootbeer possible.  you soon realize going faster makes you spill more, but slow makes you fall behind.)

people spill rootbeer everywhere, and everyone gets really sticky...very entertaining

    3.  sick-a-buck (a bareback game, everyone playing puts a dollar bill (or larger bill, but all the same) under their theigh.  start at a walk, then sitting trot, then post trot, then canter.  sit the buck, but if it falls you're out.  winner takes all!

    very fun to play,

    4.  cray paper obstacles.  (teams of two have a string of cray paper linked between them.  go through the obstacle course side by side, but dont rip the paper!)

lots of turns make it fun, the faster you go, the harder it gets

  4. 1. Potato race

Set up the number of barrels you have horses (i.e., if you have 2 horses, 2 barrels; 4 horses, 4 barrels) upright at one end of wherever you are (field or ring or whatever) and put 3 rocks (or sponges--originally potatoes, where the name came from) on the barrel. Put a bucket at the other end of where you are. Starting at the bucket, gallop over to the barrel and turn quickly around the barrel, and as you go around it pick up one of the rocks. Gallop back and drop it in the bucket. Do that until all the rocks are in the bucket. Whoever's fastest wins!

    2. Mangoes (musical poles)

Set up one less pole than you have people (i.e., 3 horses, 2 poles; 5 horses, 3 poles) about the distance apart that you'd usually have them (two trot strides). Have the horses and riders (mounted) go around the ring at different gaits (have a person be "announcer" who says when to do what). At a random point, the "announcer" says "MANGOES!" (or any other random word) and the riders race to get their horse to stop between the poles.

    3. Obstacle course

Just set up stuff (jumps, poles, etc) around and go through them--fastest wins!
