Okay so heres a very big question of mine. I want a career in the city where i can come up with advertising ideas for companies to sell there products successfully. I like to be creative and im very personable.I want to be able to pitch my ideas with a team of people who work together to come up with creative ideas.

soo.. what is the difference between advertising/marketing/PR/communications because i feel like any of those majors could be part of what im looking for. Are they all very similar? and if so which one would best suit what im looking for?

thanks to everyone who answers : )

  1. I definitely can't tackle that question in its entirety and I would suggest talking to a college/university adviser at a school with all of those programs.

What I know from my experience at Oregon State is that communications is what it sounds like - it focuses on interpersonal communication, writing, speaking, etc. and I imagine would be helpful with the "pitch" and charisma side of the word you're interested in. I don't believe we have advertising or PR programs here, but I know a little about marketing - and it's done specifically for athletics here. I may be jumping the gun and running into a slippery slope sort of logic, but I imagine that marking programs would be specifically designed for a certain field within marketing and not just the entire concept of marketing.

In short (and probably not helpful) words, I'd recommend thinking about the type of marketing you want to work within and pursue advertising/marketing in that field and consider double majoring or minoring in communications, writing, or even something like psychology if the courses concerned with the minor are relevant.

Also, you may consider studying in the city/state you want to eventually work in because the course material may be more relevant to the local job market and you may have better chances of internships, making connections, and developing work experience in that city early on.

  2. Communications has a broader job market. "A communications specialist can work in human resources, advertising, publications, research and development, sales and marketing, and training departments" If I was you I would pursue marketing because it is more geared towards pitching ideas and is synonymous with advertising. Public relations gives you positions in advertising but you usually wind up in human resources and positions like that. "A public relations specialist works on developing and maintaining a favorable image for an individual or organization. They work for consulting firms or large corporations, doing research and compiling data, writing reports, news releases and promotional pieces, and coordinating special event and meeting opportunities for target groups."

Marketing when done correctly is where the money and fun is and I think it's what you're looking for. But you have to be excited about it and good at it. Cheers
