  1. Environmental health is about protecting peoples health by managing the environment.  Typically these positions are with public health agencies, however consulting firms also have environmental health professionals (EHP).

The actual work includes both public and individual exposures to pathogens or other unhealthy settings.  An EHP might work in enforcement assuring that polluting activities meet the legal requirements for those activities.  Another enforcement activity would be compliance with regulations for safe food and water.  On the consulting side an EHP what provide expertise and services to insure their clients meet standards for protecting public health and safety.

The course work is an aggregation of physical and life sciences combined with enough math for modeling and statistical analysis.

  2. I assume this is how the environment affects people's health, not the health of the environment? I think it's pretty important. People need workplaces that don't make them sick from toxins in the air. We need to know when things like lead and asbestos in the home can harm and even kill us, so we can remove them. We need healthy water. It might sound dreary, but if you're the one who's sick, it's super important.

Some work choices are public health, public policy, health inspector for workplaces, researcher.
