  1. i like the horsecollar rule and also the bill billacheck rule lol 5 yard face mask dont bother me but the horse collar rule is the best one in there im sick of people bringing Chris wells down just because they cant catch up to him

  2. As I ref, I like most of them.

College games are longer than pro games.  They've been tinkering with the timing rules for years to try to fix this and they may finally have stumbled on something, emulate the pro rules (geniuses).  The clock starting on the ready on an out of bounds play doesn't happen in the last two minutes of a half so a team can still use that for a comeback.  The new 40 second clock will help teams get more plays in to compensate for the clock running more.

Horsecollar tackle is going to be tough to enforce and it doesn't happen often.  But the injury is devestating so it's a good thing overall.  The NFL has had this rule for several years and it doesn't prevent grabbing a jersey, only grabbing inside the collar of the jersey and immediately pulling down the runner.  It doesn't apply to runners between the tackes or QB's in the pocket either..

I like the new emphasis on hits on defensesless players.  Too many people try to "light up" receviers simply because they can which was resulting in too many unneccesary injuries and a lot of bad blood between players.  This gives us a lot more lattitude to clamp down on these plays.

Simplifying the chop block rule was sorely needed.  Certain chop blocks used to be legal, now none of them are.  Good safety rule.

No 5 yard facemask any more is something the coaches wanted.  I don't care either way.

I love the new sideline warning rules.  We used to give them 2 "formal" warnings in addition to a lot of informal warnings.  Since that debacle in last year's Holiday Bowl brought the issue to the forefront, it should make it easier for officials on the sidelines to work and not have to trip over people.

As far as the Bill Belichick rule, I don't care.  I'm never going to get involved as a game official in that.

  3. The clock rule is evolving to go along with the emergence of the spread offense in college. The facemask rule is a good one. It's hard to determine which is which and any facemask pull is dangerous. Maybe it will deter some of these.

I saw a high school quarterback destroy his knee in the first game of a season a couple years ago from a horsecollar tackle. These being banned is a great thing. If a player's cleat catches wrong in the grass it can really cause some damage. That Quarterback payed his dues for years and one stupid play caused him to miss his window to college ball.

  4. I would have to say I'm in favor of most all these rules. Now if the NCAA could get a playoff system going, I'd watch more regularly.

  5. I love the Bill Belicheck rule.

Just like in the NFL, unless somebody tattle tales like Eric Mangini, how are you going to know signals are being filmed and how are you going to catch them.

    Silly.

  6. I don't think I'm going to like the clock starting on the refs signal on out of bounds.   I think it will make it alot harder for teams to come from behind and win a game in the last half of the 4th quarter. I find it sad that the main reason they want to change the clock rules is so the tv networks can add another 30 minute show to their schedule.

I agree with you on the facemask thing, it doesn't make sense to penalize  guy when the person he is tackling could duck his head, and the tacklers fingers brush the facemask.   I liked having a 5 yard facemask penalty for unintentional violations, and an accidental 15 yarder could change a game dramatically.

It sounds to me like they went a little overboard on the jersey rule....I agree that horsecollaring a ball carrier could seriously injure someone, but grabbing a jersey in the middle of the back, or grabbing someone by the shoulder pads is different.
