what do you think of this gun? http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_770.asp

i am looking at it in a .308 or .270 if not in stock i can use the .243 but i would mostly prefer the .308

what do you think of this gun or the brand?

i was on the site and there is videos and one of the videos is saying that right out of the box the scope is zeroed and makes it that much easier on me if i want to go shooting as soon as i get it. i will purchase a different scope as an after market product tho.

  1. That is a Great rifle at a Great price, however think about getting it in the 30-06 because you have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from with the 30-06.* The 30-06 has Harvested more Big game than any other rifle except for the 30-30 Winchester since 1906.*

  2. I currently have one because we give them away as part of membership promotions for our Sportsmans' Club.  I have fired it out to 300 yards and it is plenty accurate to hunt deer.  The scope adds little value as it is a very cheap scope.  You are better off buying a bare rifle and adding a better scope.  My biggest complaint is the cheap feeling molded stock and the rough bolt.  The sling swivels and trigger guard are molded in.  The bolt is totally different from a 700 bolt and is one of the least smooth bolts I have ever felt.

For the same or only a little more money, there are better choices (nicer rifles) such as the Remington 700 SPS for a little more or a Marlin XL7 for a less.  The Savage Stevens is a fine rifle for the price as it is accurate but you do not enjoy the benefit of the  Accutrigger and the stock is very cheap.  For around the same price as the 770, you can get a Savage with the Accutrigger.

The XL7 is available in .270, and the SPS  and Savage are available in .308 or .270.    The .270 is going to do everything a .308 will do and it will get there quicker and flatter.

  3. I'll be honest with you and give you the same advice a retired police officer gave me. I was looking for a Remington 710 or 770 bearing in mind the quality of the 700. Believe it or not, he told me to go with a Savage instead. Savage obviously makes much cheaper rifles than Remington, and Remington wanted to compete with a similarly priced rifle. Unfortunately, I haven't heard many good reviews about either the 710 or 770. However the 700 is an excellent rifle which I would recommend.

It should be noted that I don't own either of these rifles, and can't say for sure from experience - I'm just passing on the word I got from a reputable source. Take from it what you will

  4. if you are going to buy a 308 buy a used older model.but the gun looks great for the price.my suggestion to you would be to go to the range find somebody who has one and ask if you could put it up to your shoulder to see how it feels to you

  5. i know nothing about guns, but just by the picture it looks pretty cool............

  6. Save a little more and get a Savage.  The 770 is the new version of the 710.  The 710 was mandated to Remington by Walmart so they could sell a cheap Remington rifle that might capitalize on the popularity or the 700; and that is exactly what they got - cheap!  The 710 was so bad that Remington stopped making it and came out with the 770 - and it isn't much better.  All they did was improve the action a little.  The bolt is rough and hard to cycle effectively, it isn't accurate to save it's own @$$, the trigger is heavy and in NO way smooth and can make you 'jump' causing you to miss.

The Savage is so much better in all categories.  You can also look at the Mossberg 4X4, but the Savage Accu-Trigger is worth the extra 80 bucks.

  7. low end remingtons aren't known for great accuracy right out of the box; the model 700 is better than the 770 for sure.  if you are open to suggestions i would recommend a Stevens rifle by Savage in your price range.  They are great guns with floating barrels and superb accuracy.  www.savagearms.com

  8. I get the impression you haven't shot a 308. If you are new to shooting, do realize that one in 3 or 4 new shooters who start with a 308 find the bite unacceptable and quit the sport. Don't be in a hurry. Load the 270 with 130 grain bullets, and have a gun which can handle everything straight up smaller than Moose and Grizzlies! Many have taken plenty of both of those with the 150 grain 270 loads, but that is really stretching things! Conversely, if Mule deer is your largest choice of game, the 243 with the 100 grain Nosler Partition bullet delivers 1000 ft-lbs of energy out past 400 yards, assuming you can hit anything at that distance, and at negligible recoil to s***w up your aim. The scope pictured may be a Burris. That's a good scope if it is. Go to the rifle range and tell folks you are deciding how much gun you can shoot well. Folks are usually glad to help new people with this. Say Hi for me! Regards, Larry.

  9. I'm going to agree with dca and John above, to a degree each. Get a 30-06 in the Remington 700 rifle. You get the best of the best that way, and it's not a whole lot more expensive to get a 700 instead of a 770.

  10. Personally, I'd save a few more bucks and get the 700 instead of the 770. The "woods-ready" advertising is also a bit too much. It may be bore-sighted, but that isn't remotely the same thing as being sighted in. Also, the fact that you mention 308 and 243 suggests that it's primarily going to be a deer rifle. I'd suggest you think really hard about 7mm08 as a third choice. They're all the same case, but 243 is a little on the light side, and 308 a little more than you need. 7mm08 is about perfect for deer, and since it was designed to knock down metal rams at 500 m, it isn't lost in the target department, either.

  11. I have no personal experience with this particular gun

But it does not enjoy a good reputation amongst the people I know that know guns

If I'm not mistaken it has a big following with the

"I don't know nothin bout guns but that looks cool" crowd
