If I remember correctly, that is when we re-enter the Milky Way arm.  While we are apart of the arm, we have not been within the arm itself for quite some time.  Many theories exist, some good some bad.  At this point, I would suggest two options: More bodies mean more gravity wells (attracting things that collide) and more space dust

Either don't make me feel warm fuzzy.  I'd rather have two geometrically sync satellites around every planet as an early warning detection and alert system.

However, in my own life, I don't lock a single door in my house or my car.  I feel dealing with a thief is less hazardous to my health than dealing with a planet killer asteroid.  

You might feel different, but the Mayan Calendar isn't too reassuring considering that it ends on Dec 12 of that year.

As for the poles flipping, tell your parents to relax - truthfully, its not a big deal.  It's happened every 25,000 years for 3.4+ million years.  For the Earth, it's nothing more than getting a finger nail trimming.  Or standing on a different foot to put on the other pair of pants.

As for mankind, which has sort of adapted it's tecknology to the magnetic north and south poles (compass, GPS, satalites, communications, etc...) It WILL reck havoc, but we will adjust.  We were here for the last 2 million years.  That means we have survived 80 polar flips.  Sol changes it's sun spot polarities every 12 years and we survive those without anything more than - Ah the year of the Dragon is here again.

A healthy suggestion would be to learn the old ways, navigation by sexton, moris code, crystal radios, pony express, etc... If there are enough people who know the old ways, then we will get through the initial hiccup just fine.

AS for the planetary alignments, that is just as serious as the asteroid problem.  But it is out of our hands.  We can either get our butts in gear as a species and leave home, or stay and deal with the consequences.  The last major alignment took out the 5th planet from the Sun and is presently our asteriod field (you know that circle of nickel rocks and water ice bergs between Mars and Jupiter?).  This kind of planetary explosion is common and evidence can be seen around every major Gas Giant in our system (Jupiter has 3 ring, Saturn as more rings than moons, Neptune and Uranus have a few).

Again, it's nothing to worry about.  Either you start pushing for nations to wake up and create Interplanetary, generational space ships and make every Sci-Fi writer very happy, or you realize there is nothing that can be done except pray we can live with the consequences, or flux into a different dimension.

By the way, the present fifth planet from the sun is Jupiter.  Jupiter is capable of becoming a protostar (a mini-sun - as discussed in the movie 2001 Space Odessy), however, it doesn't have significant mass and would millions of years from now would collapse into a dwarf.

Calm, intellectual decisions are what needs to be created.  Flipping out is for unintelligent animals.  As a species, we have more than enough time to do something intelligent, the main question is can we get our act together in time to do it?

the mayan cycle everyone is talking about is just that, a cycle, not the end of days, its like western society looks at 1000 yr cycles, just because its 2000, or 2001, doesnt mean the world is ending, jsut that we r starting over again.

.the planets have lined up a bunch of times, and yet, they still circle the sun amazingly and the poles changing doesnt mean the planet flips unside down, it means the magnetic poles switch places, and if that happens, or i should say when that happens, cause again, its happened a bunch of times, many interesting things will happen, but the world coming to an end isnt one of them.

lots of people like to think they r living in significant times, the end of days coming just helps them to justify their feelings, every 15-20 yrs someone comes up with a new deadline for human history, citing earthquakes, famines, wars, floods, volcanoes, plagues, hurricanes  tornadoes and other horrors, which have pretty much always been with us and most probably always will. unfortunately u will never convince someone that they r not coming, not when there is so much evidence  to prove them rite, so its best just to let people believe what they will, unless they try to force u into the same belief. try not to make fun of them when it does not happen, someday u mite believe in somethign too.

Do not worry.  Do not be scared.  I assure you that the world will not end on 2012 December 21 but it will end one day.  Remember that if there is a beginning, there is an end.

December 22, 2012 is when the Mayan calender stops. I've heard that they were so terrified of what they saw that they ended it. It could be anything. A meteor like what killed the dinosaurs ( In fact, I saw on a science show that said there is a comet that is going to be dangerously close to us in that year..), First contact ( which could be good or bad), global warming could get the best of us, or it could've even been a bad dream that some Mayan visionary had.

We may never know. But, until we find out, we should continue to live the best lives possible for ourselves, our families, and our planet.
