  1. Yep, as the posters have stated dress is pretty casual.  It's the American way.

  2. Here's my recommendations based on the almost 20 cruises I have been on.

The dress on ship is casual all day until 6:00PM. So take swim wear, shorts, sandals, beach shoes, your snorkel equipment if you have it, sun glasses and sun screen, lotions, a cap or big hat for the sun, a book if you are a reader, your music player, sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym, good walking shoes, your camera, and other personal toiletries.

After 6:00 PM they request that you wear "sports or resort casual" attire. That's attire that you would expect a person to wear in a business office, (like a bank employee), shirt with a collar, slacks, skirt, blouse, etc. You can still wear shorts and swim wear in the pools and spas but not in public areas like dining rooms and restaurants, show rooms, bars, casino, etc.

Most cruises have a formal night or two when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship’s Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. But most people do dress up in a tux for men and a long dress (any color) for women. Some men just wear a suit and tie and some women wear a nice dress but not a gown. You will not be denied access to the dining room or anything else if you choose not to dress up.

If you are going on a Norwegian cruise things are even more informal for dinner and they call the formal nights, "dress up if you want to" nights and not many people dress up compared to other cruise lines.

If you do not like to dress up and want to wear shorts and jeans all of the time there are places on all cruise ships where you can go eat in that attire.  You just cannot wear it in the main dining rooms.

  3. As much or as little as possible depending on where u are and what time of the day it is.

Usually there is a dress code to which you have to follow for dinner so u need to take a few smart dresses but after that it is totally up to you.

  4. Mostly casual clothes. If it is warm, shorts and a t-shirt are fine. You'll want to have a nice outfit (suit/tux for a guy and dinner gown for a girl) for the dress-up dinner if you plan on attending -- but that is usually just one night.

  5. It actually depends on the cruise line you choose.  Some cruise lines have a dress code for dinner and shows, whereas other cruise ships, for example, NCL does not have a dress code. You can wear whatever you want as long as its something :)

  6. casual clothing, comfortable shoes when you arrive in port, sun glasses are a must and a hat, they will have a few nights of wearing something more formal on the ship.

  7. casual clothes for day if you go to a nice place wear black attire. You can also just walk around with you bathing suit and a cover up with some flip flops.
