What do we do with this Stray Cat?

There has been a stray cat in the neighborhood for months, and my family finally trapped it. right now It's sleeping in the Garage by itself apart from the other animals. The poor cat is TERRIFIED. It was obviously born a stray, and has most likely never had close contact with people. But now that we have caught it, we don't know what to do with it. My parents want to take it to the animal shelter, but there is no way it will be adopted and it might have to be put down. It has extra toes and it's not friendly. The cat didn't put up a fight once it was trapped, it just curled up all scared in the corner of the cage. You can stick your fingers in the cage and it just looks at you with it's big, blue, scared eyes. I don't want to bring it to a shelter!!! Think if you were that Cat, with only fear as it's final moments.... We already have 2 cats and 2 dogs.... What should we do?!?!?!?!

P.S- My family has delt with other wild animals. We raised baby racoons into the wild, but we have never adopted wild animals into civilized homes.

  1. If you live in the city, turn it in to the humane society. Tell them where you found it and that you would like to adopt it and ask for a complimentary spay/neuter coupon so you can have it neutered at no cost to you.

If you don't want to keep it, just turn it in and they will try to adopt it out to someone after they have worked with it for a while.

  2. Spend time with the cat in the garage.  Don't try to hold him.  Just sit in the garage and talk quietly to him.  Make sure he has food and water and watch him for any signs he might be ill.  LEt him know you aren't there to hurt him.  He's probably feral and has never been in contact with humans before.  He MIGHT turn out okay.  But be prepared for the chance that he might always be feral.  All you can do is play a bit of a waiting game and see how he reacts to you over a few days.  DO NOT try to hold him or play with him if he doesn't want you to.  That's a sure ticket to being bitten.  Give him some time and see what happens.

  3. try to be patient with it, leave adds in the thrifty nickel or other newspapers so word gets out....put signs up  someone somewhere will want the cat

  4. You don't adopt a wild cat. You don't take it to the shelter either.

What you do is make her an appointment to be spayed and get her up to date on her shots. After she recovers from her surgry, let her outside again. :) Feral cats do best in the oustide home they're used to. Once she's spayed she can't reproduce and make more wild cats.

  5. First things first, go to the vet and get the cat its shots and get it spayed or neutered.  Then if you can't take care of it, put an add in the newspaper or on craigslist for a family that has experience dealing with feral cats.  Take the time to talk to the family so you know your cat will be with someone who has the time and experience to get it used to being with humans.  Since you found this cat, you have every right to say who it goes to, so don't feel like you need to give it away to the first person who calls.  Wait until you find somebody who seems right.

  6. Neuter or spay it, get its shots and then let it out- keep food and water outside  somewhere and just let her be she wont bother anyone unless she's hungry- she probably wont want to come into the house or anything-- this is what they are doing with cats now- they do not want to remove them form their colony because the colony stresses  when one of its member is missing- and when they stress- they breed-  Harvard or ... one of the Ivy league colleges  anyway did a lot of research on this and it is the right thing to do.  It is called Trap/Neuter/Return protocol.  Then, once the animals'  fixed- you just let it go and put out food for it.

  7. sounds like its feral when my cat sugar died we got a feral kitten she super scared but made best friends with my other cats dinah and pepsi

so try to put your other cats in with her
