Question:

What do we need to get a small recording studio set up?

My friend and I wanted to start a little movie studio in his house. We both have Macs (I have an iMac and he has an iMac and a MacBook,) and we have some software (Final Cut Express and the trial of Final Cut and Shake), but the camera we have is a cheap Samsung DV camera, and we can't do much more than chroma-key. We want to do live keying, and I know that we need a mixer, but I have no idea which one to get. Also, we need a new camera, preferably HD, and I would like a second monitor. Also, I have been doing some 3D animating in Blender, and was wondering if we could incorporate that into our movies. So my question really is: What is the grand total of things that we need to start our small little studio (for as little money as possible), and how can we make a small profit, if possible?

Thanks so much!!! :)

  1. you make a profit by having clients. you get clients by providing for their needs. most clients want event coverage (ie marriages, youth football matches or concerts), adverts/news releases, or assistance in a project that is already defined/under way. there is very little demand for studios now that cameras are portable and can get pictures nearly anywhere. Keep the samsung and use it as the second camera/cover shot at live events. very few people want HD product at this point, and even if they did how will you deliver it?  your most likely product will be DVD and not widescreen either. buying a good camera is ok, just be sure the 16:9 feature can be switched off when not wanted.
