What do we think of the FCC?

Being from the UK, I've never really had to think about an American institution, but lately I've began to discover more about the American censorship system. DO we agree with the endless fines and censor-ships by the Federal Communications Commission?

So thank you for your answers, and happy 8/8/08! Enjoy the Olympics!

  1. Can you provide examples of this 'censorship?'

The FCC manages the radio spectrum (which is considered to be public property).  The American people have simply decided that certain violent and sexual content is not appropriate for transmission over the public airwaves.

This same content can be freely transmitted on any medium that is not public property.

BTW - I suggest that you read up on the First Amendment and wonder why your nation does not posess this fundamental human freedom.

  2. The Federal Communications Commision is a do nothing agency.  It does not prohibit, indeed, seems to help create communications difficulty in the United States.  There are individual communications towers that only support one cell network.  Whereas if the towers were used by all cell users there'd be more competition and the benefits would be for the users not the telecommunications company's who are raking in the money by charging for minutes used, phones and other charges and fees associated with using their monopoly.

All this has been allowed by the FCC.

    Not so in Europe!

    thanks
