I pretty much know what an upper class woman wears but what do working class women wear? Does a poor woman wear a corset or a hoop? Please try to give me pictures of these outfits.

  1. another item normally worn but not mentioned was the corded petticoat. It helps hold your dress hem 0put of your way when working around the campfire/ovens etc.

  2. Most of the ladies around here that follow their husbands in the re-enactments wear long hoop skirt dresses.  Button to the neck.

Long sleeves, gloves. And of course the brim bonnets and parasoles.

But the common ladies wore lindsey-wooly dresses or plain linen.

with an apron - no hoops/corset but cotton simple under shirt and pantaloon.  Gingham, Calico fabrics simple design. Because fabric was very expensive and they would trade vegetables or wheat flour or corn meal to the store owners for fabric.  A dress would have to last a long time.  Then when it was worn too bad - it would be cut down for the kids or made into a quilt.

  3. as plain a dress as you can get.. long sleeved.. down to the ankles. solid color would be best. you can add an apron if you want.
