Can a bug twice the size of a fly that is black with wings be an ant or a termite?

  1. They are black, have wings, & they eat wood...


  2. google, insects. then search for wood eating insects, or black winged insects. winged termites are slender in length and about 1/2" long, and about an 1/8" wide. They come out after the first rains, then their wings fall off. You may have seen one of many species of wasps.

  4. Termites and ants often look alike, but a termite has a fat waist whereas an ant has a very thin waist. Termites have beaded antennae, ants don't. Ant antennae have a distinctive bent to them whereas a termite's antennae go straight out.  A termite's wings are both the same size, whereas an ant's forewings are longer than the hind wings. Termites don't bite.  Ants do.
