  1. To the guy that says Colombian food is not great ....well I got to say he really has a poor taste!.  and by the way Colombia is great!

  2. have you seen the film scarface then you will know what to think of colombia

  3. No i dont think there is anything you need to worry about. Like someone else said, the political climate is a lot better than it was 10 years ago. Kidnappings are down like 80% and murder is down like 50%. Dont walk around flashing your diamonds and your money and you'll be fine.

All the major cities have tons to offer. Bogota has a lot of culture, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in south america; museums, nightlife, arts, etc. Cartagena, Santa Marta and San Andres y Providencia are good for laying on the beach. Cali is a big party town.

anyhow, just relax and have a good time.

  4. First of, safety is your primary concern as it is of everyone. Going to Colombia is like going to any country, you just have to be careful because you are a tourist! (muggers have a nose for us)

but after that, it is an awesome, beautiful country, where you can find all kinds of weather year-round (from tropical islands to snowy mountains), beautiful happy and outgoing people, AWESOME healthy food (and some not so healthy lol). All in all, you will have fun FOR SURE!

  5. Great place. Highly recommended for the young and the restless. A cultured, classy country. Good taste all over. Sure there's cocaine, but that's US, Canada (my country) and Western Europe problem. With our money up here we're funding the violence down there. Some answerer credited the current president with lowering the crime rate. That's bulls*h*i*t. The current Colombian president is a shame to the greatness of that nation: always kissing the US a*s*s* So, don't worry. You don't have to go and paying him your respects. Have fun. Great destination.

  6. Beautiful women and drugs

  7. Bogota is OK, travel with someone from the area. It is not that safe in some areas. Don't chow anything that may indicates you may have money on you. Enjoy the coffee, dinning is international, at least in Bogota. And if you are going to adventure out Bogota. Go to "Andres Carne de Res", it like Colombia version of Hard Rock Cafe.

  8. It is great for nightlife, weather and nature.  I would not go if you are not interested in these 3 things.  I wouldn't miss it if you are.

I don't like the food very much and there are not as many cultural attractions in safe areas ( eg the south has inidigenous and pre-colombian stuff in war torn areas) as many of the rest of South America (colonial part of Cartagena being the exception).

The level of violence has been diminishing the past 10 years thanks to the current president.  The latest published stats have a murder rate lower than Venezuela and the kidnapping rate has dropped almost 90% since the drug trafficking kingpin days.  It is a lot safer now but still well worth being careful, just in acse.

  9. I've been traveling to Colombia at least every 3 - 4 months for the last 5 years... It's an awesome country..... Don't let anyone scare you about the drugs and rebels (people who tell you that are people who have never been to Colombia)... Colombia is like any country you travel to... you need to take the same measures to ensure your safety as you do in Mexico or even Ecuador (I've traveled extensively to them as well).

Anyhow, to answer your question on places to see. Since I'm not sure where you will be I'll list my favorite places/cities in order:

    A)

    - Medellin: This is my favorite city because it's beautiful as well as fun. They have a metro, pueblito paisa, outside the city you can go to the piedra del penol (worlds largest rock. it has an amazing view), and there is plenty to do with the night life and good eateries.

    - Bogota: The capital city is beautiful. The museum de oro, the historic colonial district and you should venture out on a tour to the Cathedral of Salt it is definately not to miss (on your way back stop and eat at Andres Carne De Res. It is some of the best steaks you will find). Also you can see the capital from Mt Serrat.

    - Cartagena: This place is awesome if you like colonial architecture. The beaches are ok for hanging out becareful in the water as the undertow is rough. Your best bet is to take a tour to the islands of rosario (Islas de Rosario)... the tours usually include a visit to the acuarium and a private island or the island of Baru.... the waters at the islands are carribean blue and awesome for snorkeling.

    - Cali: Cali is always fun but it's gotten a bit rough over the last few years.

    B) What to do to prepare for your vacation.

    - Since you don't say where you're planning to go you should pack for all weather. Couple pairs of jeans, shorts, sandals, walking shoes, light jacket and shirts. Bogota can be cold at night, but the climate is similiar to Los Angeles. Medellin is warmer than Bogota and Cartagena and Cali are hot and humid.

    C) Food is great wherever you go. Colombian food is mainly meat and potatos so you probably won't have any issue's.... but be adventurous and try everything.

Music is awesome and it's tropical - Merengue, Salsa, Vallenato, Cumbia, etc. Have fun.

Festivals - remember that 7/20 is independence day.

I love Colombia... the people are great and friendly, the food is fantastic, the culture is marvelous..... I love it so much I married a Colombian woman. ;)

Don't let anyone scare you... Colombia is safe as long as you use your common sense and are aware of your surroundings. That's the same advice I give to anyone traveling to any country that is not the USA.

PS. Feel free to email me if you want to chat further.

    John.

  10. COCAINE....thats all I gotta say about that

  11. i think it produces beautiful women!

  12. I like Colombia because that's where Cumbias came from, and the fact that there's a lot of beautiful women there. The negatives in my opinion, is that's where coccaine is grown.
