Millet, Quinoa, Kasha, Rice, Barley, Amaranth, etc.

What do YOU add to them? Do you add sauces, condiments, etc.?

I am especially interested in low-sodium things.

  1. soy sauce, or you can just add some honey with yogurt. Or buy Kashi....they have whole grain tasty foods

  2. I experiment with herbs a lot.

  3. Sea salt.

  4. I use veggie broth instead of water and add garlic to most everything.

These are some recipes I like to use with grains.  You can add no salt or a pinch of it and still add flavor to your meals.

I like cooking kidney beans or lentils along with my rice and then smothering it with curry or coconut sauce.

  6. low-sodium soy sauce, garlic powder, olive oil, italian seasoning, etc...

  7. I add a dressing, once my grains have cooled:

Rice Vinegar, bit of oil, Ginger, Mirin, dash of soy sauce (you probably could use Bragg's), pepper, and a bit of parsley. I also add a bit of sweetener to the dressing: Agave, sugar, honey if you use it. I shake it up on a jar and pour it on the grains while they are in a strainer (that way the excess dressing drains off).

Goes wicked on wheat berries with a few veggies chopped up  in it. Also works on chilled soba pretty well. I'd assume it'd work on near everything.

  8. Fry up some diced: onion, garlic and green pepper, then add some diced tomato and a little water. Let it simmer for a while. It makes a yummy topping for any grains.

  9. There's this Mrs. Dash seasoning called Hot N' Spicy that I use, and also a pre-made Trader Joe's pasta seasoning that I like. They're sodium free but have a lot of flavor. I also drizzle things with olive oil, or I sautee them lightly with onions and mushrooms or garlic to infuse them with flavor.
