apparantly 2 mexican women sent in a complaint saying that using "Beaners" as the name of a successful coffee shop was offensive, even though the whole country knew it was relating to coffee beans.

i wanted to know what you all think about this.

the company was forced to change their name to "Biggby Coffee", and these stores were scattered throughout 6 states, with tons of locations in each state.

i find it obsurd, personally.

  1. I think we live in a pathetic, liberal, whiny, PC, world..and it drives me crazy

EDIT: All of my life we've gone to a pancake place in Myrtle beach called Tar Baby's.. It seems to me that would be worse than a coffee place called Beaners, yet there Tar Baby's sits, serving tens of thousands, selling T shirts and coffee mugs with the logo on it.

  2. I'm not surprised. Such a name would not be acceptable in these politically correct times.

Ever hear of the restaurant chain called Sambos? There were several thousand of them across the US. It started in 1957.  Turns out the name came from a mix of the two owners names.  In the restaurant decor, they really played up aspects of the then-popular children's story Little Black Sambo.

Problem? Well, in the 70s, people sensitivities had changed...and many got offended because of the racist implications in the name. Sambo is a pejorative directed towards Black people.  I can remember when I was a child my family going to Sambos for meals or for special occasions, and I don't recall any of us getting offended either by the restaurant or the book...but apparently enough people were offended enough to complain.

The owners even changed the name of the restaurant to the Jolly Tiger and Sam's, but it still didn't make a difference.  People still complained. They couldn't shake the racist image they had, and they lost business anyway. In the 80s, the restaurant had a variety of lawsuits against them accusing them of everything from infringement to discrimination in employment.  They eventually filed for bankruptcy and basically went out of business with the exception  of the one Sambo's restaurant left. It's the original one in Santa Barbara, California

AFAIK no one is currently complaining about them keeping the name Sambos for the one restaurant.

  3. Dude the name of the shop was BEANERS. do you not understand the racial implications of this name?  If I drove by a place named Beaners I'd laugh my *** off!  How do you think that makes the Mexicans feel...
