  1. This car is something to avoid, for quite a number of reasons.

    (1) The 1997-2002 Pontiac Grand Ams are on Consumer Reports' 2007 and 2008 list of Used Cars to Avoid.

    (2) The Pontiac G6, the successor to the Grand Am (GM has been changing names quite often of late), is on Consumer Reports' 2008 list of the Worst of the Worst.

    (3) The 1999 Pontiac Grand Am has a Reliability Percentrank of .01 (making the Grand Am the worst or second worst for model year 1999), on a scale of 0.00 to 1.00. For reference, the Pontiac line has an overall Reliability Percentrank average of .26, General Motors has an overall average of .33, Honda has an overall average of .84, and Toyota has an overall average of .91.

    (4) The Pontiac Grand Am is AutoOnInfo.net's leading contender for the worst model ever made, based on reliability from model year 1988.

    (5) The Pontiac Grand Am is on AutoOnInfo.net's 2008 list of Autmobiles with Worst Engine Reliability, with a Composite Reliability Score of -.88 on a scale of -1.00 to +1.00.

    (6) AutoOnInfo.net's detailed reliability and durability studies suggest that a typical 7-year-old Pontiac is as troublesome to own as a typical 51-year-old Honda and a typical 36-year-old Toyota.

  2. They really are junk.  They were supposed to be a nice upgrade from a Cavalier or Sunfire, but the components they were made from were so cheap and poorly engineered that they are far worse cars.  They suffered from poor design, outdated engineering, terrible reliability, and a double dose of just plain ugly.  Fuel mileage was average at best.  The 86-91 models were ok back in their day.  The 92 and later models were awful from day one.

  3. I owned a grand am and every time i turned around i was putting it in the shop for different reasons. I would not own another one in my life....

  4. A lot of them are probably a piece.. but of course, not all.  I prefer the older ones .

  5. My wife has driven a 2001 3.4L Grand am SE since july of 01. it was purchased as a demo car and besides routine maintanence this car is @ 98,000 miles and still runs great considering the fact my wife has gone several thousand miles past her oil change a few times. It will probally need a paintjob soon due to tree sap but mechanically it has held up very well. But that's just our experience.

  6. THEY MAKE GREAT ANCHORS... !  AND GOOD PAPER-WIEGHTS..

  7. Grand Ams are LEMONS!!! General Motors make the WORST cars in the world.

I own a 2001 Grand Am (bought in '04 as a leaseback). The first year it was great but by the second year I was starting to pump money into repairs.

I have spent $5,000 since I bought it, replacing the front end and replacing it again and again. I baby this thing and it now needs another $2,000 of work!

2005 New ROTORS, brakes, calipers  approx  $700

    2006 Steering rack                         $684

2007 New ROTORS, brakes, calipers          $600

2007 New tires due to unfixable alignment  $540.82

    2008 new fuel pump                         $900

2008 New ROTORS, right bearing, strut, upper strut mount $959

    2008 Turn signal switch            292.00

And again 2008 - it needs new brakes, LEFT wheel bearing, tie rod end, outer tie rod end                     $1786

I have spent $5,000 over four years and it is NOT DRIVEABLE. It barely runs and since I refused to go in for the latest round of repairs I'm told it has 3 weeks of life left.

TALK TO MECHANICS - they will all tell you that Grand Ams are c**p and that ANY GM vehicle is a lemon. They are LEGENDARY for rotor and front end problems like mine has. Steer clear. Buy Japanese and don't listen to Chris K who is prejudiced in favor of GM and American cars even though they are c**p.
