"Ladybird" is their name in (British) English, given to the beetle America calls the "ladybug"

Ladybird is a corruption of "Our Lady's bird" - "Our Lady" refers to the Virgin Mary, so at some point it was association with her.

In some languages the name translates as "little messiah" or something like that, so for whatever reason, the ladybird has had religous associations in the past.

A male is still a ladybird.

Ladybirds are called that because they belong to Ladies, so the s*x of the bird or bug doesn't matter.

If you are talking about a raptor, though, the female is larger and therefore preferable.
