To tell the truth, it is only a fiction invented by Japanese entertainment novelists and Manga artists in recent several decades.

A kind of fantasy like Startrek made in the U.S.

By the way, normal type (not totaly fiction, not s**y) ninja wear is often called "Kuro Syouzoku"  (black wear) or "Ninja Syouzoku" (ninja wear), but it is also disputable that if real Ninja in old days wore it.

  2. Happi Coats

Happi (法被, 半被) is a traditional Japanese straight-sleeved coat usually made of indigo or brown cotton and imprinted with a distinctive mon (crest).

  3. Yes they are happi coats - and they are worn at festivals - known as matsuris - in Japan. They look really comfortable actually and I bet they are cool during the hotter summer months.
