What do you call it when the river rises?

you know... when it rains a lot and the river rises... and floods things occasionally... I think it's called "ebb" when it goes down?

When a river rises it is called cresting - to crest is to reach a high point - i.e. "The river crested last night and flooding was a concern."  Flooding occurs when a rising river reaches the flood-crest level (the highest point it can reach before flooding occurs).  The river cresting will be monitored and residents will be issued a flood-crest forecast as a precaution.

  3. Ebb is a term for the outgoing tide as in the ebb and flow.  So I am guessing that flow must be used to describe the rise of a river but I am not certain.
