  1. Elsastella is right, but the name "Lucania" is actually the ancient name of the region, used before the Romans. Lucani was in use long before fascism.

During fascism, the regime was used to change names of places, often "restoring" the ancient one.

It's anyway common the name of the inhabitants differ from the current name of a region or city: inhabitants of Naples for instance are yes called "Napoletani" but also "partenopei", from the ancient Roman name of the city (Partenope), while inhabitants of the city of Ivrea are called just "eporediesi", for instance.

"Basilicatesi" does actually exist and is sometimes used, but "Lucani" is far more common.

  2. Lucani

  3. lucani, since basilicata had been called lucania during fascism. after, they resorted to basilicata, but still call themselves lucani. a bit tricky, i know, but that's italy for you.
