A country ruled by a king or queen is called a monarchy. A country ruled by an emperor is generally called a kingdom or empire.

I believe there are only a few, if any, absolute monarchies, kingdoms or empires left, meaning ruled exclusively by the king, queen or emperor. I think Monaco is one.

Most of those types of governments today are constitutional monarchies or kingdoms, with the ruler having powers ranging from merely being a figurehead to having some limited powers in the government. Generally, countries are run by a large government, like the one in the US, and the monarch or emperor has more ceremonial duties than actual governing duties.

The big exception, the one type of country where there really is basically just one person in charge, are places run by an absolute leader, called a tyrant or despot. He or she holds all the power. While the word tyrant has negative connotations, it isn't always the case that the tyrant is a harsh and cruel leader. It just means that they hold either all the power, or nearly all the power in their one single hand.

By the way, there are many monarchies that are far more democratic than many republics. Plus there are many presidents who are far more powerful than Kings or Emperors - in this respect compare for example Spain and the USA.

If the USA is a democracy, then than a country ruled by a king/queen/etc. is a monarchy.  But this refers to the government aspect of the country only.

A republic and a democracy are similar in that the people choose their leaders and make the laws, either directly (such as in a New England town-meeting), or via elected representatives.

In a democracy, all that is necessary to pass a law is a simple majority (one more than half). The will of the majority always prevails.

A republic has a certain fundamental law (such as our Constitution) that sets certain limits on the government's power. Within those limits, a simple majority can pass a law. If, however, a law that goes beyond those limits is wanted, it is first necessary to amend the Constitution (in the US, by a two-thirds majority) -- then get a simple majority to pass the law desired.
