I have never been in a train before and neither has my husband. For his birthday, I want us to take a train ride that is also the kind you sleep in. Does anyone know what that is called?

We live in Northern California

Have a great day

  1. Sleeper car but you can sleep in coach also. I have hopped freight trains so boxcars and grain cars work  too.

  2. Any train that goes overnight will have sleeping accommodation. It will be called a sleeping car train. At its most basic this will consist of day compartments with seats that fold down for night-time use, while the more exclusive and luxurious version will consist of individual bedroom compartments for each passenger.

Best contact Amtrak for an overview

  3. Sleeper train,  the most common cars for these were built by the Pullman Company,  which name is sometimes used also.

You don't say where you want to go,  so check the link for routes that may interest you....

  4. Amtrak offers a variety of sleeping arrangements--called compartments--on its long-distance trains.

For a good description of the sleepers, as well as how to ride Amtrak, I suggest you look at the following website devoted to train travel in the United States:

    http://www.on-track-on-line.com

then click on "Amtrak Travel Tips".

  5. They are called sleeper cars. They have roometts and bedrooms. In the roometts there is just enough room for sleeping (just enough room in bed for one person). If you are planning on some surprise, romantic, hanky panky you might consider a bedroom. Have fun it is a great way to travel.

  6. Living in Northern California I highly recommend you trying the California Zephyr which travels between San Francisco to Chicago. Check on www.amtrak.com for rates and your closest station.

  7. crazy as it sounds i believe it is called a sleeper car. very creative. have fun.

  8. A sleeper car.

Depending on where you live you might look into Amtrak's Service.

If you are living here in the Bay Area, (San Jose) then you basically have two choices, one previously mentioned as the California Zephyr.  Which runs from Oakland to Chicago.

The other is the Coast Starlight, which my wife and I use frequently to visit our family on Seattle.  As with the California Zephyr, the Coast Starlight is a beautiful journey.

The #14 Coast Starlight is the Northbound train out of Los Angeles and makes its way over the old Central Pacific Coast Route until it arrives in Mount Shasta, CA then cuts east to hit Klamath Falls, Oregon.  Out of the Bay Area its mostly a night train until just north of Redding.  It will be just about dawn when you are crossing Lake Shasta and entering Dunsmuir.

The #11 is the Southbound train, and it will mostly be a night train through this area, then you will get to see most of California in the day.

When we book out train, we normally get the Roomette, its just enough for my wife and I.  But its really nice because the berth converts into a pair of bunks for the night.  During the day the lower bunk converts to a pair of chairs that face each other in the big window.

There is a power outlet in the berth, so my wife and I normally take our portable DVD player and out head-phones and watch movies as the scenery goes by.  Don't forget your camera.  You are going to need it.

The food on the train is really good and when you purchase the sleeper, your meals are included in the ticket price.  The Observation Car is nice and there is a snack bar with a lounge.  The parlour car is really nice! and that car is reserved for the customers who purchased the sleeper option.

The staff on the train is really great, we have never had any issues with the staff.  However, Amtrak is not your best bet for travel if you are worried about getting to your destination on time.  Although they have been getting better, I just caution folks, because they are on Union Pacific Rail, and they are under their control.  So UP has a tendancy to give their freight priority as a result.

But nevertheless, you will enjoy the ride.  Its been really nice everytime.  Above all, you get to meet new people.  That is the best part.

Oh yeah, just so you know.  My wife and I are not some old fuddy-duddys, both of us are 36, and just love to travel by rail.

Good luck and enjoy your trip!
