  1. There are two scales. One is Richter scale .This will give you the energy released during earthquakes from the origin point called focus or hypocenter. It is not directly connected with the destructions. This unit has no upper limit. So far we have sensed only up to 9.5 .That was struck at Chili in the year 1960 next to the one is Sumatra earthquake at 9.3 in Richter scale created Tsunami. I am giving below the chart for energy release. The another one measures the intensity of earthquake is called Mercalli scale. This vary from place to place for same earthquake depending upon what damages it caused and what people felt during earthquakes. It starts from one and ends with 12.Up to 2 you can not feel. But at 12 every thing will fly off.

Here is the chart for energy release.

Approximate TNT (Tri nitro telecom )  Yield for Seismic Energy

                           Richter scale

                                       1                     30 lbs

                                       2. 1 ton

         3. 29 ton

         4. 1000 ton

         5. 32000 ton

         6. 1 million ton

         7. 32 million ton

         8. 1 billion ton

         9. 32 billion ton

        10 1 trillion ton.

  2. Richter scale.

  3. Now I'm not sure If I'm correct, but for each point it goes up, it was 30 times greater then before, for example a 5.7 was 30 times more then 5.6
