What do you commonly think when the host/hostess of a restaurant seats you next to the kitchen doors?

I thought it quite odd that on a date yrs ago, the guy I was with claimed that the restaurant "lost" his reservation, and that most likely, we would wind up at a table next to the kitchen. Sure enough, that was exactly where we wound up.

I'm wondering if this is a standard practice among restaurants, to "leave" the table(s) next to the kitchen area as "open" unless a situation like a lost (or never received...late people) reservation occurred. I'm thinking that my date NEVER set the reservation, and scrambled to get a table, and that was the only one open because of his blunder.

What's your spin on this?

Well I definitely think he fibbed. I don't mind sitting there too much. I prefer somewhere else, but it is still so much better than sitting next to a bunch of screaming children!

I WILL NOT sit by the kitchen door OR near the restrooms -- that's not acceptable.  If hubby makes a reservation, he KNOWS to tell the host/hostess this  -- should we be surprised by a less-than-desirable table location, we politely ask for another and if they are booked, we go elsewhere.

Heres what I think when they offer to seat me there:

That I got a crappy table.  Seats near the kitchen and/or bathroom doors are the worst... not only for possible smells but because other people are walking right by you all the time.

Tables in quiet little nooks are for important people.  Tables near the kitchen are for nobodies, unless there really is nowhere else to be seated.

it depends on the restaurant, the service and the food.

I work at a fine dining lodge/restaurant and we don't necessarily do that.  Although we try and place our people with reservation close to windows to look out on the Lake or close to the cozy fireplace.  But the fireplace is also by the kitchen door....
