What do you consider a TRUE environmentalist?

To me, it's a person who gives up all luxury and has the guts to live the way we used to live before the 1700s. To be more specific: Native Americans used to be an example of true "environmentalists", though their belief was just to cope with Nature, not exploit it. So what's your definition?

  1. I think a true environmentalist is someone who puts mother nature's needs ahead of their personal comfort. Not flying in their jumbo jets, with their gas guzzling cars,  power draining houses. And none of those crappy carbon offsets. I mean, how long will it take for a tree planted to correct the damage? Years I would bet. Someone who respects their world, and tries to live here without leaving much damage.

  2. your own personal luxury is irrelevant .

You can be sitting in a Rolls Royce ,and still be a good Environmentalist,

A Good Environmentalist loves Nature ,both Flora and Fauna ,tries not to harm the concept in any way ,and does his best to help it it any way they can .And some can help a lot more than others

Rich people are more effective in many ways because their money speaks louder than the poor guy on the bicycle who does not contaminate.

Check my entry on Eco tourism and see how much money from the rich people is plowed back into the Environment.

    Note

random mentalist,to be cremated is not Environmentally friendly it is breaking the Law of nature ,the LAW OF RETURN,denying the Earth its due ,a body must be return to the earth to become compost and feed the worms which in turn feed other life forms ,and so completing the cycle of life ,

to burn a body robs nature and breaks the cycle.,and is there fore immoral.(this means to be buried with out a casket, just in a hole ,preferably with a tree planted on top ,not a cement ornament,so creating sacred forests instead of a collection of concrete)

  3. environmentalist-1 a person who is concerned with or advocates the protection of the environment. 2 a person who considers that environment, as opposed to heredity, has the primary influence on the development of a person or group.

I think that unless if you're rich that you aren't truly able to go out of your way to help the environment w/o harming it. Or if you want to be a homeless hobo. A true environmentalist recycles, buy products that cartons are made of recycled materials, and tries his/her best to use as little energy as possible.

    Are you one?

  4. What is so magical about 1700? Why not 1700 BC? Why not 5000 BC? What makes everyone think that way??

In just one area: Do you really want to give up hospitals?

  5. A true environmentalist would not foul his own nest,or anybody else's. No human has ever survived to successfully procreate. There has always been groups or tribes. Talk about guts, read accounts of travel in the U.S. during that period. Can you imagine WALKING all the way from N.Y.to the west coast in a year?

A true environmentalist would understand the effects of their existence on others!

One of the ways that a decision was made by some Native Peoples, was to consider the potential effects on  their people, for seven generations into the future.  Using that way of thinking ,we could avoid some terrible mistakes!  Could it be just a coincidence that it's been about seven generations since we conquered the Native Peoples? Did you ever read what was said by them, concerning our future? Pretty shocking ! We're in for a very rough ride,my friends!

  6. Could we stop furthering this myth that native Americans were somehow far nobler and more environmentally conscious than us? This whole myth began in the 1800s and it's become annoying. What made them superior to the rest of us? They made war on each other continually, though they rarely fought to the death or wiped each other out. They went where they want and stayed until they'd killed all the local animals and foraged all the food there was, then they moved on, the same as nomads all over the world. If you believe the myth that they used every bit of the buffalo you've seen one too many Kevin Costner movies. The key difference was that they met another race that was better organized and had better firepower and numbers. That doesn't mean one is superior to the other in any other way.

A true environmentalist used to mean a conservationist who believed we should deliver the planet in at least as good condition to the next generation as the one we received. But the more rabid and vocal they get the harder it is to even agree with that tenet. They truly seem to think humans are some infestation on the Earth and I think a lot of them wished we could just die out. The recent History Channel about Earth without us showed some environmentalists who were clearly delighted at the prospect of an Earth without humans. Sick.

  7. The true environmentalist is the tree.

  8. A true environmentalist works to offset not only their own impact on the earth but also the impact of other people.

  9. to me, somebody who is dead and cremated and had there ashes spread in a forest

  10. Selfish individuals who claim to love "the earth" but actually just don't want the human race to drown, burn, suffocate or starve to death due to our own stupidity.

  11. That girl that ended up living up a tree for years just so that they wouldn't cut it down, that took guts! I can't p**p in a bag for several years!

  12. Hey, I like the tie.

  13. WHY CALL PEOPLE WHO LIVE A NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE WAY ENVIRONMENTALISTS? THAT'S HOW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO LIVE. IN ACCORDANCE TO OUR ENVIRONMENT. WE LIVED THAT WAY FOR THOUSANDS OF YRS

I THINK THAT THE QUESTION SHOULD BE WHAT SHOULD THE PEOPLE WHU DEPLETE RESOURCES FASTER THAN THEY THEY ARE REPLENISHED, POLLUTING, ETC... BE CALLED TODAY?????

  14. A hunter, fisherman, or trapper.

  15. A true environmentalist in my mind is someone who dedicates their life in preserving our earth and promoting initiatives to Save our Planet.

  16. A natural fiber wearin', potchouli smellin', tree huggin', dreadlock sportin', herb smokin', birkenstock floppin', socialistic thinkin', non shavin', Wild Oats shoppin', bicycle riden'  B O smellin', Boulder, CO native.

  17. I totally agree with you definition. Someone who is a true environmentalist will spend all their time and energy into making the environment better. They love to be in the outdoors and are also willing to live out there if they have to.
