Inside linebackers protect against the running back from running the "football". Outside linebackers are designated to attack the quarterback or defend an "alternate" receiver. That's your answer in simple form. Like most Sport, I could have written a book to answer this question.

you sometimes blitz after the qb or in some plays you might just wait for the running back to try and rush through the line. you might even fall back and offer pass protection against a tight end or reciever.
